Daily Forecast: Southern California
Sunday’s forecast has a chance at surfable shape at the protected spots, but onshore winds will come on pretty fast.
Forecast Overview
Sunday will have more of a surf window through the morning with the current wind forecast looking light and variable…unfortunately the front that moved through on Saturday has the weather pretty destabilized, which means there could still be a bit of slop leftover and the winds can shift around pretty quickly.
The Swell
The mix of W-WNW energy (265-290) will get a more thorough blending so rather than short/long-period differences, it will become a more jumbled up 13-14 second period mix. Size will stay about the same but I expect the larger sets to become less consistent.
The Surf
Size will stay about the same as Saturday but I expect the larger sets to become less consistent. Overall average W-WNW facing spots will be in the shoulder-overhead range with some occasionally bigger sets. The standout NW facing spots that don’t mind the stormy nature of the swell will be in the head high to a couple of feet overhead on most sets…and still a few bigger waves at the “exposed” breaks in Ventura and South San Diego, but I expect the really big waves to become less consistent as we move through the day.
The Weather
Right now it looks like the early morning winds will be manageable, particularly at spots that have some sort of good wind protection…high cliffs, good positioning, or even some kelp or something to take the edge off. I wouldn’t count on it being clean very long, unless your spot can handle NW winds, which should be blowing around 10-18 knots through the afternoon.
The Skinny
Again the weather and the winds aren’t doing us a lot of favors…there is plenty of the swell in the water, but the winds only give us a short window in the morning before they shift onshore…and if they don’t lay down early enough Saturday night there will be a lot of leftover short-period choppiness. Because of these sort of funky factors I think the morning computer check (cameras and wind stations) will be a good call unless you live right next to the beach and can do the 5-minute driveby. If the winds are blowing…make sure to check on direction, if they are super northy (I know it even felt dumb typing that word) or coming out of the S-SE (not super likely unless the next storm front steals a march on us and shows up early)…there are a lot more surf options…if they are W-WSW it will be pretty hacked up throughout the region.
