FINAL TSUNAMI UPDATE – All warnings and advisorys have been cancelled

By on March 12, 2011 @ 9:00 am

FINAL UPDATE (Posted SAT 10am) – The West Coast and Alaska Joint Tsunami Tracking Center has dropped us back into the green. I know there was some pretty costly damage to some of the marinas/harbors along the West Coast…but really our hearts go out to the people of NE Japan. There are a few ways to help…you can work with groups like the American Red Cross or Save the Children. I am sure there are a host of others out there…if you know of one that is specifically focused on our surf/ocean community lets us know if the comments section.

UPDATE POSTED 1:00pm – While there is still a lot of energy sloshing around the Pacific due to the major earthquake that hit Japan it is becoming less likely that Southern California is in any sort of impending danger. The West Coast and Alaska Joint Tsunami Tracking Center has downgraded Socal’s status from WATCH to ADVISORY…but they still left the bright scary red banner in place to remind us that the northern portion of the state still has some potential hazards.

UPDATE POSTED 7:15am – Looks like the big brains at the Tsunami tracking center are still trying to get a grip on the potential danger for the West Coast, in the meantime, likely to be on the safe side, they have issued a Tsunami Warning for all of West Coast from Point Conception Northward (Basically all of the West Coast that has that more exposed West Facing Exposure). They have issued a Tsunami Watch for Southern California due to the nature of the beaches not having as much exposure as spots to the North of Point Conception.

You can get the latest updates from the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center here http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/

If you were watching the news or are on the interweb like I am…you may have heard that an strong earthquake, someone in the range of 7.9 – 8.8 on the Richter scale hit Japan causing a ton of damage and a solid 12’ Tsunami that impacted areas across Japan’s NE region.

It has also triggered Tsunami watches for areas across all of the North Pacific as well as many islands spread throughout the central Pacific. Right now NOAA and the USGS are just issuing warnings and watches for almost all of the potentially effected regions…so there isn’t any reason to be in panic mode…but they do want people to know that the potential is out there.

The West Coast is not forecast to be in any immediate danger…but they have issued some Tsunami arrival times just in case. It looks like we should at least have an eye on the coast around 7am-9am

Adam, they have the whole beach closed this morning. It seems a little over the top – I really cant figure it all out, until I hear from my forecaster. Now I feel comfortable again.

Next time, can you just give us a heads up that there will be an earthquake and possible beach closures in the forecast. That would be awesome, thanks.

Thanks for posting so early Adam. I do feel like this site is one of the only way to get non-hysteria type info.

Waves look nice, and its empty. Anyone want to bust down the wall – we need a bunch of surfers – they cant stop us all.

I’ll work on the earthquake forecast site next. Maybe we should figure out a way to only let certain people surf while we test out the warning systems, you know people who are fans of Solspot…and say a forecaster or two. We should probably do it while trestles is firing…yeah, that sounds like a good idea.

for real matty, i know what ya mean about the non hysteria info. its nice.

  2. kelly sl10er says:

anyone know what beaches are closed and for how long?

  3. NOTE: Hey everyone, we have paused the panning on cameras to record the events. Thanks for understanding – we’ll start panning again shortly.

Definitely beaches closed down through Dana Point and San Clemente where we are – though pedestrians are everywhere.

  4. Matty says:

Newport as well as Huntington are closed. It looks like there is some surge moving through ventura, I’m sure there will be some weird surge moving through our area anytime

  5. Oceanslider says:

I surfed this morning at the Oceanside Harbor. It was pretty fun!

  6. Dave says:

They even have Trestles on lockdown still.

  7. Cams are going back on tour. Thanks all.
